Curiouser and curiouser. You know how Sony dropped the price of the 60GB PS3 model by $100 and then announced a new 80GB model bundled with MotorStorm? Well, it seems that the new 80GB model (retail $599) will be the only PS3 model available once the supplies of the 60GB SKU are exhausted. This, according to David Reeves, SCEE President in an interview with GamesIndustry:
How concerned are you about possible criticisms that you should have given European consumers what SCEA has given US consumers, i.e. the option to pay a lower price?
(David Reeves) Well, they're not really are they, because what the US are offering from the 1st of August is a USD 599 version with one game. All they're doing is taking their stock in trade that they've got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July.
So once the 60GB is gone, that will be the end of the 60GB then?
(DR) In America, yes.
Update: Dave Karraker, Senior of Corporate Communications at SCEA has categorically denied the statements be SCEE President David Reeves.
"I just wanted to clarify something. I've seen a lot of posts this morning related to the 60GB SKU and the comments by SCEE President David Reeves. As we announced this week, SCEA's product offering in North America consists of a 80GB PS3 available in August and a 60GB PS3 available now for $499. We will have ample supplies of both models to meet the needs of consumers for the foreseeable future.
"Those quotes from David Reeves are not accurate. He said that if they had lowered the price in Europe, that territory would have run out of their current inventory by the end of July."
Adding more confusion to this controversy is an interview with Kaz Kurai with VGTV:
(Kaz Kurai) Well again from a hardware perspective, the 499 price adjustment that we did for the 60GB version for the American market, we are no longer in production of that product. So, once that product is no gone from the retail shelves, we are back to the 599 SKU only. So it is not like we have a two price strategy here in the US market. We found out early on that consumers react mostly to having only one SKU as opposed to two.
Update 2: And things get spicier with this statement from SCEA:
The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 until supplies of that unit are depleted. We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come. We won't be making any further announcements regarding our hardware offerings in the North America at this time.
So when the $499.00, 60GB SKU is extinguished, does that mean the 80GB SKU will drop in price, or remain at its current market price of $599.00? Sony is mum. |

2timing cocksucker FTW. And I thought after awhile I could buy the 60gig on down the road because of the price drop with the other one coming later this year. Looks like that wont be happening because they will be 'gone.' Who NEEDS 60gigs anyways? Id do just fine with a 20gig system. |

It depends whether you have any intention of using it for media down the line as I imagine that Sony will go down the MS route and offer downloadable films etc. also PS3 games install files to teh HD to decrease load times etc. From my experiences with the 20 gig 360 I suspect that it would be easier than you think to fill those 20gigs, I certainly have to keep an eye on memory management as with a couple of demos on there my drive is virtually full. Map packs for games take up a surprising amount of room eg 700mb for the latest Vegas map pack. |

nooooo~
EDIT: Besides, "dumb" does not even begin to encapsulate the zaniness that is SCE.

I think moronic, incompetent, ludicrous, and empty-headed are much more faithful.
The good news is in another six months they'll be able to announce another "price drop" and release a 100gb version for $599 as they slowly sell off the remaining stock of the 80gig for $499. Genius! |

Not a huge deal, depending on how they labeled it initially. If they officially called it a "price drop", then yeah, it sucks ... but if they said selling inventory cheaper, then it makes sense.
And you are basically getting 20GB and a game for "free", so it isn't all bad. |

But those downloads cost money. After buying a $500 system I wouldnt be buying much food or paying many bills afterwards much less buying any intangible content. They really should offer a no-HDD version seeing as you can plug almost any store bought HDD into the thing. My friend put a 120gig in his. It could drop the price more not having a HDD in it and make options open up for the middle class gamer, meaning more units sold. I only get about $700-$800 a month in paychecks minus food, gasoline, bills and rent I have more or less nothing to buy anything from Sony or anything else with. The price of the thing is ludicrous. You could buy a 360 and a Wii for that. Have two nextgens instead of one.

Whoa whoa whoa! So you're saying I could plug my Maxtor external HDD into the PS3?!
Huh, if so then I have to agree with Psycho Xeno. Why don't they just release the PS3 without a HDD, then release a line of peripheral, stackable external HDDs.
I bet in a couple of years, when Sony does the inevitable PS3 slimline redesign, that's what they'll do.

colinp: I don't see your point ... apple does this every bloody time they update their systems, they just don't give you advanced warning.
Apple always does little updates, available immediately, but keeps the same price. Then the old stock is sold off at discounted price.
Sony just did it the other way ... first announcing the discount, and then announcing the updates.
I don't see the issue ... you're getting 20GB more and a game for the same $599 price as before, and you can buy the old system for $499. Explain to me how this is a dirty trick? |

Just for clarification purposes, does this mean you no longer believe, "If they officially called it a 'price drop', then yeah, it sucks"..?
