As I said.. might as well have shut the forum down when you banned Socratis.
This place wasn't that busy.. and he was the top poster, and by far the most replied to poster who generated conversations. Great idea!! |

Reluctantly OT, pretty much all the message boards I used to frequent are dead.
I think it's because more and more new (and seasoned) nternet users are connecting with touch screen devices or phones, etc that require too much effort to type shit out. Well... that's one of my theories anyway. |

Its a trend shift I think. The internet culture is a series of styles and fads and forums are sooo 2002. I remember major websites would have links to "discuss this topic on our message boards" but those links have been replaced with tiny icons so people can simply Like the page on facebook (and cross post to twitter, etc) theres no feeling of a larger community you need to join in order to add your opinion, instead yOure just adding someone elses thoughts on to your facebooks news feed where people you already know add a quick remark from their phone while on lunch break. The internet feels completely different than it did just 5 years ago, whivh felt different than 5 years before then. For what its worth,. I dont like the current feeling. The internet today is too routine, efficient and clean-but all unnaturally so. It doesnt feel like "surfing the information highway," or anything that seems exciting or exploratory, its more like reading a magazine while waiting at the dentists office.

In the great words of the Timberlake, 'BOOFUCKING HOO cry me a fuck you if f you disagree. ' Socratis has camped over the line of decent taste a long time ago and most other civilised old school forums would have banned him by now. Your point is akin to that of banning a sex pest from a dilapidated but still slightly used playground.

This place has been a relic for a long time as people fairly infrequently point out as Warrior has said. I'd be happy to set up a GG subreddit for people to post there as that site is where I spend most of my internet time. Much more sophisticated system than a mere forum. I rarely frequent any forum these days to be honest, I find them a comparatively poor way to esocialise and find information unless I've used Google.

Here's GG's problem: 30 active members and half of them moderators who regularly take weeks off from posting, then want to swing their dicks in your face if you comment on the forum they barely run, that barely exists.

Whoa, a thoughtful and insightful post from Ryan, whoulda thunk? I'd have to agree with your assessment, the Internet is fast becoming a faceless blob that's so generic that it makes Paris Hilton look like an original.
Everyone's liking, rehashing and blogging way past the saturation point. The level of discourse is severely watered down and cynicism is so pervasive that nothing means anything anymore to the majority of posters. That and narcissism is the new, big disease that's drowning out the voice of relevance and poignancy. Even if somebody points out that the emperor's new clothes isn't, everyone else would be too busy hailing the latest fad to notice, and yes that's my cynicism sneaking in as a result of the changing times, and I'm aware of the irony. I'm leaning towards the Internet's cons outweighing the pros; as we've become more connected through technology, we've never been more distant from ourselves and each other because our focus is as blurry and misguided as Michael Bay's direction. Oh and points to Salvage Guy for calling a troll a fucking troll, let's not dress it up as some rock star that has come to save us all from boredom and irrelevance. I'd rather have a lull in activity, which is the nature of things, than have a nuisance dragging everything down to its level. |

speaking of middle easterners do you guys remember Kindred? i liked having him around because all the lefties here had to avoid the threads he posted in so they couldnt be forced to agree with him or defend the outlandish things he said. i wonder if he's blown himself up somewhere or something.

I don't necessarily agree with forums being an old way of looking at things. Kentucky Sports Report is pretty active and I've posted on those boards for five years or so, avpgalaxy seems as popular as it ever did, and many others are still going strong.
I think its this PARTICULAR board that has slowed down because these particular people have changed. Niggas, we are getting old. We got more shit to do and less time to do it in. When I joined I was a in HS. thats close to being ten years ago for me. I had no responsibilities. I had plenty of time to waste. Internet message boards aren't something you can really pass down to younger members of your family. Especially when the relevant discussions no longer exist/interest to keep the majority of the members around anyways. AvP? Huge draw in the day. After the multitude of shitacular media releases following the second avp2 game in both the movies/games department it'd be hard for any fan to keep his interest. GTAIV thread was huge but only lasted a couple of years. ETC. What drew our interest is no longer pertinent today. You don't have a big enough mass of people here to draw like minded individuals to this site, especially when its subject matter is dead. This is something that a place like KSR doesn't struggle from because the tradition of the program last for fucking ever and our grandparents are fans, and our children will be fans. I imagine it's like being a New Yorker and loving the Yankee's, or being in Cali-fon-IA and liking the Lakers. Face it gents. We are dinosaurs. Trying to hold onto the bones of our last meal as the asteroid is about to impact. But also, you can say fuck it. Life is cyclical, and what is popular today won't be popular tomorrow but could be again the day after. |

thats an interesting side piece that i dont think necessarily contradicts my overall theory but it does add to why these particular boards are less active. it has to do with the way the gaming industry is now a days. firstly, theres much more variety out now than when these boards were big. when these boards started there were relatively few 'big' games and those games tended to have sequels come out once every 2 years or so. now there are several competing game franchise in every genre that all release sequels and updates and such every 6 months or something, it seems like. so theres less of a 'community' to develope for any one game. you could get a group of people together to talk about black ops but why bother? mw3 is coming out in less than a month. the games themselves are different too. they're all geared toward multiplayer with more emphasis on individual interactions [or at least the ones i play are]. what i mean is this: when gta3 came out we were the biggest board for discussing it. people would come to the forum because it was these place to be, and they'd say "hey guys im having trouble finding all the blahblahblahs/completing this mission/unlock this" or whatever. then you'd have a bunch of people tell you where the blahblahblahs are or how they completed the mission. now if i wanted to figure out how to beat it i just go on youtube and watch a video of someone doing it. another thing: games dont have cheats anymore. i was thinking about that the other day. what the fuck, i loved being able to play res evil 2 with unlimited ammo for the machinegun some days with the game shark or whatever it was called. when was the last time you played a game that allowed you to press a few buttons and turn on god mode and infi ammo just to fuck around for a few hours? long story short, the way communities of games are set up now a days you dont need to go to an outside forum to get info or discuss shit.
