I was in a "when it comes..." mood with this film before, but I'm kind of annoyed I have to wait 'till June 7 now. Been seeing a lot of ad's on TV and the net for this and it's perking up my excitement a bit. Thankfully I haven't seen any creatures in any ad's though... Seems utterly silly they'd show creatures in the trailers.

Though, again, we have to remember trailers are aimed at the average moviegoer who see them once, think that looks like something they want to see, but can't remember much about the trailer by the time they go to see it. They're not aimed at fans who will watch them over and over, pore over every detail and maybe even create (let alone watch) slow motion versions on YouTube.
I didn't read the appalling review of Prometheus that cropped up on the net before the Fox lawyers crushed it (because it was by someone who had seen a stolen version, allegedly), but the impression I got from the comments afterwards was that it was written by a fanboy of the 'clone Hicks' variety. The main thrust of their attack was that it violated their own personal sense of the Alien mythology and that was why it was a desecration of everything Alien was 'meant' to be. I reckon if you want a film that has an alien queen, eggs, facehugger, chestburster and full grown beastie, you'll be better off sticking to your Aliens DVD. I'd actually be genuinely interested to know what our dear departed Xenomrph thinks of Prometheus. Actually, on Googling him he's still out there, doing the same old thing. I hope he hates it after it craps all over his version of the mythology. |

I didn't realize we knew anything about their mythology. I knew they came from the Derelict, but apart from that... wtf?

When you joined GG was probably the height of all the silly debate over the 'facts' of the alien origins and their nature, and what is and isn't 'canonical'. Some of it was dreamt up by the people who wrote the comics. The rest was purely speculative. Do you remember the infamous 'caste vs cowl' debate? People who threaten legal action against the owner of this site over matters of opinion will hopefully find Prometheus a miserable experience.

I very vaguely remember those debates, though I didn't pay much attention to them because half of them were ridiculous essay long posts. To hell with that, I had things to do, haha.
I didn't know there were legal action threats though. That's amusing. |

Did he actually threaten legal action in an open thread or did he just do it in an email to Pezman? As I understand it he was still a moderator here at the time, and the issue was that somebody else had come up with a theory similar to Xenomrph's. Xenomrph claimed copyright (ha!) of that opinion and when the other guy refused to credit Xenormph with being the author of his opinion, Xenomrph wrote to Pezman, demanded he sort this thief out and delete his posts, and threatened to sue Pez as the site owner if he didn't comply. Pezman duly had him removed as moderator and Xenomrph slunk off to the Terminator 3 site, where he quickly reverted to old habits and started using everyone's favourite Mrph quote against everyone who disagreed with him: "Your opinions are not facts and my facts are not opinions".
I would say Xenomrph reminds me of Dr Sheldon Cooper, but I actually quite like Sheldon. But anyway, I spent far too long this afternoon cyberstalking dear Xenomrph when I should have been working on Book 3. God knows why he keeps Tweeting at Alec Baldwin, though one hopes when he keeps retweeting Michele Bachmann he realises the Michele Bachmann he's retweeting is a satirical version run by liberals. |

Good Lord, JA you scared me when you said dearly departed Xenomrph. Even though I wasn't always posting, I have been lurking around forever. I always wondered what happened to him.

Wow! The caste vs. cowl debate... I followed that one from the old incarnation of the Hive. Or was it from this forum's old incarnation? Damn it was a long time ago! Must've been early naughts or late nineties...

5 days to go.so excited!the amazing thing is that here in Turkey the movie is launched with the english title and it's not translated into some weird sounding shit.amazing becasue most of the movies are launched with turkish title.as I remember Inception had turkish title.thank god they don't double them!only turkish subtitles.this is curious fact as well because all movies showed at TV are doubled.on the site of the theatre chain I checked, turkish btw,the movie has 9.1 rating.and many people posted a lot of comments showing how excited they are.hopefully I'll have day off on friday ,otherwise I'll kill myself.or I rather kill my boss and go to the theatre

I was lucky to get the half day off to see it mid-afternoon, I reckon, seeing as I've just taken two weeks off. Indeed, I don't even go back to work until the Wednesday.
Months ago, when I booked the time off, everyone was talking about the 8th of June release date, so I thought I was safe. Appears it's only the Americans that have to wait until then! I wonder why they get it late. I thought it was the UK getting it early, because next weekend is the biggest public holiday weekend of the year (four-day weekend for the Queen's Jubilee), but seeing as pretty much the rest of the Western world gets it that weekend too, that can't be it. Pity the Italians, who have to wait until October. By which time they might not even be able to afford a cinema ticket anyway. I see from IMDB it is being marketed in Germany under the title Prometheus: Dark Characters... |

I have no idea why the west gets it later than us, but I am glad that Europe gets anything before the yanks and canucks for a change...

Been reading some reviews from screenings, not that I ever take them for granted. A lot of mixed reviews, but most people tend to like the movie.

Completely lacking any of the discipline I was hoping would make me avoid reviews, I did read a couple of the translated French ones. Of course they're poorly translated so it's possible they've come out wrong, but I doubt it's the work of art one of them's calling it, and if the worst criticism about it is that for a lot of the movie nothing happens (unlike Alien, then) that probably bodes well. No Phantom Menace!

Have only looked at star ratings from the British press (or skim read the ones that didn't have them) - generally getting reviews on the positive side of mixed, but I don't think anybody's calling it an unflawed masterpiece or anything.
Evening Standard - 4/5 Daily Telegraph - 4/5 Guardian - 3/5 Metro - didn't give it a star rating, but probably would have been 0/5 (I wouldn't trust a word written by anyone who reviews for that rag, anyway...) The Sun is also offering a pull-out section that unfolds to a poster today. Don't know what the poster is of yet - I dare not take it out of my bag at work! - but it better not be of Michael Fassbender... Tonight's world premiere is only half a mile from where I work... Am tempted. But probably not enough. |

I'm getting a "love it or hate it" vibe from a lot of user reviews. Seems though the main gripes from people that I've seen are with the writing and that the characters aren't fleshed out.

I don't know about a love it or hate it vibe. One must bear in mind that the people who tend to review movies (especially when said reviews are negative) on the internet are disproportionately of the obsessed nerd variety - remember Poopchute.com from the Jay & Silent Bob movie?
Though I imagine a lot of Alien fanboys WILL hate it. But what's new? Another 3/5 from Empire but 4/5 from Total Film, who say it "utterly eclipses" Alien 3 and Resurrection. Not sure all purists amongst us fanboys will agree. |

Three hours to go...
Though if I recall Drunk Machine is probably already halfway through it. London's Metro ran a print review that disagreed with their online one and gave it 4/5. Another 4/5 from the Independent. Daily Mail gave it 3/5 (though this was the same critic who gave Jurassic Park 3 a 5/5...). Worst rating I've seen so far is 2/5 at the Den of Geek site. This would certainly imply that the film's better appreciated by normal people than us fanboys! |
