@ skullsplitter: How many marines were just alien food? Maybe 2 or 3. Practically all the prisoners were killed off in quick succession, without evoking any feeling fo sadness in me.

Oh please, there would have been many more marine deaths if Cameron could have fit more in the squad. Crowe and Wierzbowski were wasted in a flash, as was Frost and Dietrich, and hell even Apone got it pretty early in the film. Half the marines were killed in a span of five minutes. The inmates were spaced out more, but yes, they too brought little emotional baggage with them because there were so many that the average audience member didn't know.
However, when you compare the marines that were developed to the inmates/prison staff that were developed, the inmates are clearly superior. Both 'Aliens' and 'Alien3' have fodder characters, no doubts there, but 'Alien3' stands out more when it comes to developed characters (besides Ripley, who was good in both films). |

He's just as engaging as Hicks from an audience perspective, but 'clearly superior'? Don't know. I think a wider audience dug on characters like Hicks, Hudson and Vasquez a LOT more than anyone in Alien3.

I think Aaron was one of the better characters of Alien 3. I think through the movie that he just wanted to believe that the Company would rescue him and the prisoners and that everything would be okay, and only had a change of heart when he found out that the Company was lying and was after Ripley and the Alien.
I liked him. ![]() I won't say that any of the characters from any of the four films (besides Ripley) is better developed, but certain characters are going to appeal more to certain people. |

I liked Clemens alot. I thought he was the perfect depiction of how a human would grow in an inhuman environement. Dillon was also nice, as he was clearly the alpha male there but was also the most faithful to his beliefs. The company personnal were a bit on the comical side to me: one was the archetypal antagonistic steward that wasn't too keen on letting someone disrupt his fine establishment (every prison film has one) and the other was the submissive lackey (though I liked how they depicted him as clinging on to the company for salvation). Morse doesn't stick out until the end, where he earns the title of survivor. The only other inmate that really stuck out was the lunatic who tried to free the dragon (who was that one again?). But then there was nothing credible to his character; just what kind of mental condition does one have to have to start worshipping an alien? (no offense to anyone on these boards) I felt his character was better in the original version (where his ravings were left on the hospital bed).
In fact I tend to prefer the original Alien 3 over the SE. The SE feels needlessly drawn out (although there are some way cool scenes like Clemens walking on the beach) and it took away the queen burster which really kills the climax. |

I like the theatrical cuts for all the films better than their extended or special edition cuts, so your not alone there.

The truth is, I'm more impressed with characters that can hold my interest without the use of comedy, because it's easy to make someone laugh, but when you get the audience to like the characters even though they're not all that funny - now that takes some effort. Don't get me wrong, I like some humor here and there very much, but 'Alien3' managed to get away with hardly any humor at all, which I think is more difficult to do. Although, I obviously liked the characters in 'Alien3', so I'm obviously biased; still, I think what I say holds a bit of water.

A2 if it would've flopped there would've not been an A3 or A4 and later AvP.

Put simply, Aliens shows regular people in normal day to day life (again, sort of) whereas Alien 3 is set in a prison planet full of demented people who live almost as if they were in a monastery 1400 years ago... hardly a snapshot of society. But I'm nitpicking...

Yea, I really got bored of all those Aliens, and AvP games where the Queen is almost always the final boss, when you are playing as either a Marine or Predator.
