Epps on Alien vs. Predator 2
Source: MTV February 28, 2007

Shareeka Epps talked to MTV about her role in Fox's Alien vs. Predator 2:

"I play Kendra, a human, and I basically try to protect my brother throughout the whole movie," she said. Remembering how "Jaws" once made audiences afraid to go in the ocean, Epps said "AVP2" is set in Colorado and will dictate where audiences will be afraid to go next. "The aliens return through the sewers," she said of the plot. "It's crazy." Epps won Best Female Lead at the Independent Spirit Awards for her role in "Half Nelson."

"AVP2" hits theaters on December 25.

-------

Looks like AVP2 is infact set on earth. I dont even want to see it anymore.

I doubt you'll miss much.

I expect AvP2 to be good in a bmovie kind of way, but not good in an Alien or Predator kind of way. If it even approaches P2 I'll be happy.

I have higher hopes for it than I did with the first AvP, and in the end I actually enjoyed that. True; it wasn't to the standard of a normal Alien film but with a PG-13 rating and a terrible director it was much better than it could have been.

From what I've read of this so far it promises to go back to basics, bringing back the horror, gore and grit and trying to re-capture the atmosphere of Aliens and the original Predator. I'm a little peeved that it's set on present day Earth *AGAIN*, but having learned from my last AvP experience I'm not going to judge it until I've seen it.

Things I want:

A predalien (a proper one, not a 2-second shot of a chestburster).
NO human/predator alliances!
Some new pred weapons.

Well, according to IMDB :

- It tells a story of how preds and aliens get on a little US town.
Warring alien and predator races descend on a small town, where unsuspecting residents must band together for any chance of survival...

- It's made by the Strause brothers.
Who never directed anything, and spent their lives being visual effects specialists.

- It features a bunch of nobody actors, most specialised in TV stuff.
John Ortiz ? Stevn Pasquale ? Johnny Lewis ? As top stars ?

- And then of course, it's a sequel to an already immensely mediocre movie...

I don't get how it could get any worse...

lol Quite a funny quote really.

Epps said "AVP2" is set in Colorado and will dictate where audiences will be afraid to go next. "The aliens return through the sewers," she said of the plot.

Oh noooes!! I'll never go down to the sewer again!

The town thing doesn't really bother me. Had they stuck with the original AvP idea it would've taken place on a colony that resembled a desert town and the humans banding together is obvious in in alien predator movie.

Ridley Scott had one film before Alien. Cameron two. Fincher none. For all intents and purposes, the majority of those flicks were okay. I don't know how many juenet did, but I believe Anderson had the most experience out of the Alien related materials and he did the worst.

Lack of top stars doesn't bother me either. There are numerous films that get away with this, granted the majority of them that are good are indie films. But one can hope.

The sequel to the mediocre movie would be the most valid point imo. But I can't really see it get any worse than the original. Again, since I think the whole AvP is a flawed concept (for movies) anyways, I'm not expecting a good representation of either solo series. If it just approaches competent bmovie level material, I'll be happy.

What major films had any of the Alien stars appeared in before Alien? They may have had a handful of roles, but they were all relatively unknown. Same goes for Aliens (with the exception of Beihn, who starred in Terminator), and Alien 3.

Some of the greatest films ever made have been comprised of unknown actors under an unknown director.

Oh come ON people! Where exactly does your faith in this movie spring from? There are dozens of signs (not to mention common sensed assumption) that this will be as bad if not worst than the piece of trash it's a follow up to. What portent is there that this movie will be anything but absolute crap?

John Hurt was in Midnight Express, and I'm pretty sure Skerrit was relatively well known before Alien, which is why Scott wanted him killed off relatively early, so the audience thought everyone was up for grabs. According to imdb Harry Dean Stanton also had a small part in The Godfather II.

My primary misgiving about this film still remains the time and place in which it is set. The first AvP film got away with it because it was set in the middle of nowhere - and little proof of the aliens' existence remained at the end of the film for humanity at large to find and acknowledge. The same cannot be said when you dump the aliens in the middle of a populated US town.

Furthermore, this questionable choice screams "cheap" by Fox, because they don't have to bother with elaborate futuristic props or locations to set the story in the post-Alien time period. All they have to do is dig out and dust off the Alien and Predator creature props out again.

Well, that's right. And in that case they were talented and managed to transform a dodgy concept into an unforgettable cinema experience. But Scott had already done a masterpiece (The Duellists) and had directing experience. Cameron also had one good flick with Terminator and at least a bit of experience. Fincher was indeed a total nobody, I concede that. And Jeunet had (at least in France) a brilliant career.

In any case, your points are valid, I admit that. But the Alien franchise has always known a grace, a blessing, and its directors have always been eventually talented ones. How many chances are there usually that a newborn director reveals immense talent ? How many chances that he does that with a rotten script in his hands ? How many chances is there that he may turn a sequel to a pile of crap into something interesting ?

What I just meant is that the project is crippled from the start, and putting some nobodies on it will not help.

I don't disagree, but these forums are slightly behind the info that other forums have already had.

To me, the movie screams of total recall, or starship troopers. While some certainly do not care for aiming for a bmovie, I think the avp concept is a concept that has to be done in such away. I don't think your going to have a cinematic masterpiece based on a crossover. Thats why I think the idea is flawed. The way the creatures are portrayed between the two franchises is completely different.

Predator is macho cheese. And while Alien Res did insert a certain cheeziness to the franchise, it as a whole is alot more serious than its companion series.

The things that we have going on since the initial Texas script was dumped:

One Pred.

Numerous Aliens.

Town is isolated (moutain?) community.

A convict as one of the chief characters.

A ex military afghanistan/iraq vet as the other.

National Guard (despite the NG having the same basic training and such as the regular army, you know such a force is going to breed incompetence in film like all the security henchmen Arnold has ever faced)

Street battles between Aliens and Soldiers.

Predalien.

R rating so at least there will be some gore.

Then a Jurassic Park smattering of teenagers meant to represent our times Rebecca Jordan.

Its obvious how the film will end, with a predator/human explosion wiping out the rest of the Aliens, and the film begins with the predalien crashing the predator ship in the mountain (or whatever it is) community. I also have not heard of a queen being in the film, so that could explain why the town simply isn't overrun with the creatures.

I'm not expecting a good Alien or Predator related movie. I'm not even expecting a good movie. But one can hope it fits in with the standard arnold b movie schlock, and in that regard I think it will be a success.

I'm simply not hoping it will be a good alien/predator movie, because your not going to have such a success with a crossover.

Even the games have trouble attempting the crossover successfully. In both Alien campaigns the Preds don't arrive till the end, and in the marine ones, there is barely any interaction.

My prediction: It will succeed as a movie that you watch for the splosions and gunfights, but fail as either an Alien/Predator movie, or even a crossover.

But since I simply do not take AvP as canon (and from the sound of it, no other directors/writers concerned with the franchise do either) anyways so I'm only expecting eye candy and little else.

I think it will succeed being an no brain actioner. But how many of those have we even had lately? It'll be a welcome switchup from the drama action films we've had lately.

From the fact that I was more against the original film than anyone here and in the end, despite what your or anyone else's opinion, I still LIKED it. Like I said; it wasn't up to the standard of the first three alien films, but it's stupid to expect it to be. There are things I don't like the sound of in AvP2, but I'm not going to write it off as a crap movie based solely on a few brief summaries and rumours before I've even watched it.

Pitch Black anyone?

If that's the case then how are there any aliens at all? If it does begin with the predalien crashing the pred ship then that would mean it is the only alien in the film, and we know that isn't the case because the only existing screenshot shows a regular alien.

Quote:

I've always felt that the problem with the games is that the producers felt the need to squeeze Colonial Marines into the mix in the first place. Why? They appeared in one film and got wiped out pretty much just as easily as every other social group in an alien movie. They have nothing to do with predators and have never appeared in any of the AvP comics. Their inclusion in extinction made sense, but for the other games a regular, non-military human character would have made for a better story.[/quote]

There might be a queen indeed. The PA might be a PA queen. Or the ship that wrecks might simply have eggs on it.

The colonial marines never bothered me overly, but the lack of other playable human classes did. I think the aliens rpg will probably take care of that.

John Ortiz ? Stevn Pasquale ? Johnny Lewis ? As top stars ?

I don't get how it could get any worse...
Sounds more like a Critter movie.

Hi everyone,

I've been reading this forum on and off for what seems like about 5 years now (has it really be about that long?!)..... I've just never been bothered to register before....

... anway the reason I got off my ass (sort of) was to say - Herne! You played WoW on Shadow Moon didn't you?! I also had a Hunter there called Faldara! I've seen you about many times and talked to you a few when you joined Circle of Light for BGs. I guess the internet isn't so big after all!!! (and I'm also from the west mids, you sure you're not following me? :P ).

Anyway - to make this post sort of almost on topic I shall sum up my thoughts on the last five years of AvPness as so:

1. Why the hell can't they set any future films with the Colonial Marines?! Cheese Rangers.

2. I thought AvP 2 the game had a decent enough story line..... with a little (or a lot) of work by someone with a few brain cells that could be made into something half decent.

3. Alien 3 is my favourite, but having the Predator there doesn't really lend itself to a film like that.... and you can't expect a film to be that good with 'versus' in the title.... maybe they should do what they're doing with the new Batman film and give it another name (it's using "The Dark Knight" I think).

4. It sucks that the keep bringing it back to earth - if they're going to set it in the US I suspect I won't enjoy it as much unless they end up nuking the whole continent to destroy them in the end.

Next post in 2009. Later.
