I can't speak for bullpup but I'd say on my end (not that I have done so, but I would like to go an amateur match myself after maybe a year½ of training) it's about testing yourself and your skills. There's a big difference between training a martial art and putting it to practice. Using the techniques you've learnt, challenging yourself, pushing yourself physically. Makes sense to me^^

Yeah, kinda. For me it was something to work towards, something to play with and mostly just for fun. I've been wanting to compete for ages, but there'd always be something in the way (injuries, work, whatever), eventually I just said fuck it. I had the opportunity to enter this thing, the timing was right, and even though work has been busy I still had time to train enough for it. Everything kind of fell into place and it kinda just left it up to me to work hard enough and train smart enough to be able to get in there and see where I was against someone who was going to do their absolute best to finish me off.

It's very different from training, when you're training different guys are going to be working on different things you get used to some of the different styles of the guys you train with regularly, you know each guys strength and weaknesses, if someone gets over whelmed you tend to back off, etc.
The guy I fought, I knew him through work already, he's a kickboxing/muay thai instructor from one of the local gyms, so I knew his stand up would be good, but that was about it. You get total tunnel vision, I didn't even realise he was a southpaw until I watched the video. And you can't hear shit, all I could hear was white noise, and the occassional "Go Adam!". It didn't even registered he'd tapped until someone yelled out "That's a tap!" (I think it was someone in my corner). Sensory exclusion is crazy. I'd love to find a way to replicate that under different circumstances.

panic attacks sound very similar, except ofcourse it is the flighty half of the fight or flight instinct. imagine the same thing except every part of your being is telling you to get the fuck out of there.

Try full-speed sparring in a quiet room with no-one else in there. Also earplugs of some kind, though I don't know about safety factors with that. And you're right, it's total tunnel-vision and hearing. That's something people need to train themselves not to do - it's good to be able to pick up another opponent coming at you if it happens for some reason, etc.

Ya, you're adrenaline causes alot of that. I know some people train for stuff like that and get an injection of adrenaline to see how they react to a massive wave of adrenaline then spar with someone.

That was the shittest guillotine evar. I was just using it to set up either the crucifix or the sweep, or both. You can actually see me hesitate for a second on the video, then I heard him choking and I thought fuck it, let's crank this shit and see what happens. The headgear definitely helps to control the head, but between that and the bulky gloves I thought chokes were going to be near impossible.

A bit surprised to hear that to be honest! Or to...read it but still. Not to take anything away from your victory but you won in cirka 40 seconds while being very much in control. I'm sure you could do very well if you continued. Well at least your venture into it as a sucessfull one.

Just not interested. I'd decided before the fight that competition wasn't my thing. Lots of pressure, lots of build up. I didn't get a massive rush from the win as I imagine some people do. And while I loved the training and sparring and everything leading up to the fight I can't fucking stand the diet.
I dunno. I've shown to myself that I'm more than capable of stepping in there and getting shit done, but I seriously doubt I'm going to be in the mood to do it again any time soon.

Badass dude. I've been pissed off for years about fucking up my chance to do cage fights. Was set up to do an opening match about 6 months after I stabbed myself in the leg with the sword. My sparring partner ended up doing it instead. He's like 3-1 or something now? Always wanted to try actual competition.

Why'd he try to take you down? He looked like crap taking you down (falling down with you?) and then on the ground.

Seriously. After the fight his mouthguard was full of blood.

I know his coach, and we always talk about ground fighting, so his coach knows I'm good on the ground. His coach knows my coach, and my coach has the reputation of being a beast on the ground, and this guys coach knew I got my blue belt from a guy with obscenely high standards. So his game plan would've been to stay on his feet no matter what. When I hit him with a few shots he just rushed me. It wasn't even a proper takedown, which is why I hesitated to defend the take down or pull guard or anything, I was honestly shocked that he was trying to take me down.

It was a social anthropologist’s wet dream. Never have I seen so many living Neanderthals in one room.

And what feigned outrage? I seriously miss not being able to do it. I was just as good as my sparring partner, and he's got a winning record of like 3-1. I needed to drop another 20 pounds and work on my ground game a bit more, but I'm pretty confident I woulda done pretty well with 6 months to prepare for it.
