A survey carried out two days before Holocaust Memorial Day shows more than a fifth of young Germans do not know the name of Auschwitz or what happened there.
Twenty one per cent of people aged between 18 and 30 quizzed about the most notorious Nazi extermination camp had not heard of it, the survey revealed.

It isn't illegal to talk about the Holocaust in Germany, MB. It's illegal to glorify or deny it, or to display swastikas.

Even my German friends here in the states who've lived here for a decade+ still act weird when it's even mentioned.

Eh I was in Germany for a bit and the baseball team I was coaching (made up of 18-35 years olds) talked about it without any awkwardness. In fact one warmup stretch we loosely resembles the goose step and they would often make the warmup be the goose step as a joke. I'd say it probably differs from region to region and town to town but I wouldn't say it isn't talked about.

It makes me wonder, what,exactly do they know, then? Obviously they,have to have been taught something in their school system there, they didnt have a history class they all had to,take but instead of learning what,their grandparents did they,just sat in silence for an hour every day instead of being educated on the topic of history at that time. What information is put in their brains instead?

They know "about" the holocaust but they dont know eben the most basic details about it means they really dont know it. Thats like suggesting they know trigonometry, theyre just fuzzy on what that shape with 3 sides is.
