Sega/Gearbox : Aliens FPS
Expected release is 2009, a year after we'll have the RPG. Gearbox developed Brothers In Arms, which I haven't played but is supposedly pretty good.
I'm quite surprised Predators are being excluded, but it'll hopefully yield more care and attention to the Aliens, marines and ambience of the films. |

I hope they do, they have to make the game. AVP2 was very successful, was it not? It only makes sense that it is followed by a perfect sequel. I just hope it has a more serious atmosphere like the first AvP game.

Maybe Gearbox and Sega will do a Dawn Of War. Two extensions released over the following few years that allows you to play as Aliens, then Predators - long as the original is successful enough.

2009? Bah!
Unreal 4 engine will be out by then. We already did this dance with Monolith. Till I see what exactly is coming, I`ll remain skeptical. Didn`t at all like BiAs. And Halo? Won`t go there. lol |

There is no harm in actually developing an Alien campaign for this game and allowing Aliens to be playable in MP.

It's actually the superior selling point. You can get "LAWLZ FIREPOWER" in most other FPS' on the market.
What the Aliens bring to the floor is the distinguished pwner of all game concepts - wallcrawling above someone without them noticing, hissing in anticipation, then eviscerating them with manic glee. Massively better than strafing around with a gun. The marine arsenal should be limited and prone to repeated gun jams and ammo crises. Do a Space Hulk, but obviously better. We don't need miniguns and skeeter launchers, just old bust up pulse rifles, smartguns, shotguns, pistols and flamethrowers will do. |

However, I really don't want to see Snake Aliens, Dog Aliens, Rabbit Aliens and things of the like. I would like a very standardized Alien with lots of abilities or perhaps a few different types of Aliens but all of which are very similar but also different. They should also all be BLACK!
This reminds me of a bunch of articles I wrote back in 2001 or 2002 about AvP3. They went really in-depth about the abilities of all three species. I'll try to find the Alien and Marine articles for here. |

SEGA made some good choices, Gearbox has done some fine FPS games, with Opposing Forces (HL expansion) and the Brothers in Arms series. I'm HOPING the game will use next-gen technology (ala Unreal Engine 3). Not to sound like a graphics whore, but graphics play an integral part with any Aliens(or Predator) games to make it that much more exciting and engaging. Hopefully we'll see something with engaging gameplay that isn't a "quake" and requires plenty of team work, co-operation and tactics, I guess to a pretty large extent like BIA itself.
Anyway, glad to hear there will be another Aliens FPS within my lifetime.

Hopefully there will be AvP3 to follow. I'm guess Fox are waiting for the second AvP movie to be released before they go on and make another AvP game. Just a guess.

Couldn't agree more. BiA instantly became one of my favourite games, almost purely because of the gameplay. Truly enlightened choice on the part of the developers. I'm hoping future games take a page out of the same book.

I think the problem may be, from SP side of things, some have trouble nailing down the AI and path finding issues, they end up being more of a problem than a help, but some games, like BIA have it down good - as did Half-Life 2: Episode One, in these cases, you really feel you have team mates by your side that you can depend on and you feel you have some kind of common goal, such as to escape City 17, incase of HL2 Ep1, or to survive and complete the objectives (BIA). With some games having AI by your side turned out to be a horrible experience where they get stuck against objects, or they run infront of you and get themselves killed.

It's why I liked BiA so much, most squad-based games really don't appeal to me, but BiA just nailed it. It was fun, it was realistic, and even though the graphics, etc. weren't anything special (by current standards), the immersion was some of the best I've encountered.
It's actually the reason I'm looking forward to this game so much, even if the marine is the only playable character it still promises to be a fun and unique (squad based?) FPS game. |

The gameplay should by no means hi-octane. Maybe for a couple of levels, but you should not be able to backpedal almost as fast as an Alien can sprint, you should not be able to bunny hop around like a kangaroo, you should not survive if you shoot an Alien in the face as it's right next to you without dying horribly, etc.
Should slow everything right down to a crawl and rely on motion trackers and team-mates to deal with approaching threats. Health should not be an issue - you get jumped on by an Alien, you die. Same if Aliens are playable - stick your head out of a vent at the wrong time and it should be shot off. Especially for multiplayer - survival shouldn't necessarily rely on how good your aim and strafing is, but your spatial awareness and guile. Encounters should be rare. A single Alien should prove a nightmarish challenge to defeat, not just another moving target that charges you as soon as you see it - I envision the same Alien darting around corners to circle back behind you, taunting you from surrounding passageways - only to emerge from a grate in front of you just as your gun jams. Arrrgh! |

Well even in AvP1 you moved at somewhat superhuman speed and the AI still charged you on-sight. It was really the random spawning that upped the tenseness levels.
The tense moments of AvP2 were superior on the first play through due to the scripting and slightly better level design (pipe and chains through the ceiling anyone?) - AvP was more sustainable since the Alien you shot coming that way the first time has now dropped out of a completely different vent and is now slicing your spine into ribbons. =| Also, facehuggers should go SKREEEEEEEEEEEEEE when they rape your face again. |

Anyway, for me, an "aliens" game without predators is just great news (as would be a predator game without aliens). You fight aliens with bullets and cold sweat, not with plasma canons and superpowers. | |

AvP3 needs to operate on something like the Doom 3 engine, to create ultra-realistic Aliens and Predators in extremely dark and atmospheric environments.

That's the same engine that leaves no quarter for decent AI. I mean it's lovely and pretty and fun to play through one time, but I'd rather something more immersive than a hopped up ghost train rollercoaster wiv gunz.
What with these two Aliens titles being released, I doubt we'll be seeing AvP3 on the horizon for a good while - which'll probably end up being set in some contemporary backwater hick town from the way things are looking. |

You never know Injy, one of them might be dropped in favor of AvP3. I'm confident we will see life signs of AvP3 sometime in 2007 or 2008.
