Well, problem fixed... somehow. Don't know how I wrangled it but I was able to perform a full system restore without nullifying any of my files. Then I downloaded the free version of AVG and performed a virus scan, discovering three trojans and at least a THOUSAND illegal cookies.

Needless to say, they have been quarantined and destroyed.

I did have McAfee, coincidentally, but I hadn't renewed my subscription in a while and so it wasn't updating my virus definitions. Cheap of me. I have an HP Pavilion, which really isn't worth the price or the effort of putting up with it.

As of now, it's even worse. My housemates are computer-savvy and are attempting to install Ubuntu to get right to the heart of the problem, but I've also had some problems with the CD tray reading so it stops about five minutes in.

I'll tell you what's up - ma' laptop's borked! From a trojan, I believe.
