So, this means my future in Skyrim is quite grim ?
Other than all the console/design/bug shit already mentioned I'm still having fun and have so much left to explore. |

I've given up as well. I can swim over water everywhere. So the enemy can attack me, but I can't fight back.

Hating/
What this game needs is an "interesting story mod" where the game actually sets you on a proper adventure and has an interesting story with interesting characters that actually have some importance/emotional impact. That'd be a breakthrough. It's hard to believe that The Legend of Zelda on SNES was a deeper experience than this. /Hating |

I've only briefly been trying this game, but I sense a lot of hate and dislike towards it, not only here but in general on the net and among people, despite good reviews. How come? Are people just spoiled or is this game just really... meh?

Reviews are based on speed. This means that most reviewers play as much as possible in as little as possible to throw out a review as fast as possible (ie. rushing) In Skyrim (style of games) this gives a very strong beginning score. This, I think is the main reason why the game scores so well. Personally, I believe that the game is still good and very playable, although I've had a few moments of utter boredom already. But it's been because of too much distractions, which normally means another familiar cave before the target I wanted to reach. In reality, as I mentioned below this game is a huge and excellent bluff of an RPG. The NPC's, character interaction & story are almost non existant. It's a big shell built around nothing and that's the problem that none of the reviews capture since they are so borderline short. You need to play this game for 40 hours to realise this, while on the other hand, by 40 hours you've more than enough earned your money back. It's excellent to that degree, but it's a huge sham. It's the same old quest to better items & weapons while the main benefit of epic dragon battles is shite. It's also a big lie when it comes to the engine, at first it was supposed to be all new and great, but in reality it's just an upgraded version of the F3 engine with greener shading. Same bugs, same problems, plus the usual amateur questbreakers & party poopers. In light of all that mess what the game is on the technical & creative side it's still a fantastic shell. But it could never be given a GOTY award by a person that isn't a complete moron and an idiot. That's my opinion at least. I like it, but I feel like an idiot for falling into the same trap again. | |

I feel the same. I sunk 128 hours into Skyrim, loved the first hundred, modded the crap out of it, but once I realised that the story was paper thin and guild quests are 90% randomly generated crap and there are no characters, I have no interest at all. I got to the top of the Companions in two hours. Two! The College quest line was even shorter, and just plain boring, I have no idea what happened since it required so little attention. The Dark Brotherhood quests were a lot of fun, but they were the only ones. The civil war quests are just bland, it feels like there's nothing at stake, and the main quest is the same. Killing dragons is just a matter of routine. Chop chop shield bash, chop chop shield bash. I have a harder time killing bears. (Not exaggerating.)
I don't think it was the quests that really killed it for me though, I think it's the exploration. I loved most just wandering around and looking for cool stuff, but once I got to level 35, I already had all the best stuff, and none of the rewards were worth the time. The 'puzzles' were laughable. And it's so fucking easy. Most things die with only a couple hits on Master, and I even modded it to scale the NPCs up by ten levels. Still too easy, it just makes combat more repetitive. Chop chop shield bash, chop chop shield bash. The level scaling is a bit stupid, too. I put a mod on to slow down the levelling exponentially as I got higher, because at one point I went up three levels in a single Dwemer ruin. Three! The Shouts are a lot of fun in the beginning, but it's mostly a novelty thing. Most of them are useless. Fire/Frost Breath does less damage than a single arrow, Storm Call sounds awesome but does so little damage and hurts friendlies, Ice Form freezes someone solid until you attack them, Rush is cool but has no practical value aside from getting to the next town slightly quicker, etc. It's a shame. It's a fucking awesome game on the surface, but I think the reason I sunk so much time into it is that I don't quick travel much. Most of the time I spent enjoying it was walking to whatever cave I was anticipating. Now, I hope they hand their reco-ed engine over to Obsidian, so they can make Elder Scrolls: New Hammerfell. New Vegas was a brilliant game. Once the community sorted out the bugs, anyway. |

I knew that it would happen eventually, Skyrim is on sale via Steam. $40 roughly, good deal if you ask me, downloading now, in 4 hours I'll be able to try it out. Or at the least have the game installed and ready to become the evil bastard I can be!

I could fully agree to this if it was a roleplaying game.
For me it's more like a very large action game (1st person diablo) where you get your quests from random soulless vendors and then go do them. Your reward/goal is better loot and to max all your skills. It gets boring once you achieve these things. Imho with a game this large they should have dropped all the boring quests straight away like get 10 bear pelts, there's plenty of more interesting quests there to fill the game with. |

Well, I opted for Skyrim on PC not PS3, and decided that I'd aim for 42 hours of gaming. That's how long it took me to complete Mass Effect 2 and DLC. That game wasn't without flaws, but I couldn't fault its story or characters.
Unfortunately that's my first criticism of Skyrim, the story and characters are badly portrayed and poorly integrated into the game. This hasn't stopped players from grinding away for hours in past CRPGs though, so it might not be relevant. But for anyone expecting an exciting, open world adventure like Red Dead Redemption, they'll be disappointed imo. My Skyrim experience started so terribly, it needs mentioning. Within the first minute of play, you have to jump from battlements onto a nearby roof, during a dragon attack. First try, landed, chose to drop off the roof to the right, away from the fighting. Dropped into the scenery, couldn't move, had to reload the game. Second try, landed, OK then, chose to drop off the roof to the left, into the action. Ran around for a while trying to reach the objective marker, before realising it was back up on the roof near the middle and I'd missed it, thus not triggering the next event. Reload. Third time lucky. After that I had a glitch and crash free experience until I accumulated around 30 hours of play in total. At this point the crashing started and became increasingly frequent. I'm not sure I could play this past 42 hours, even if I wanted to. There is one game design flaw that demands highlighting. Magic. I created a Breton/Merlin-type character, with the idea of focusing on magic. Now, to select a spell you pause the action by opening Favourites, select spells for each hand, cast, your Magicka decreases. You often then have to pause by opening Items, scroll through the menu to Potions, Use a Fortify Magicka potion. This constant pausing to access menus makes wielding magic an absolute bore. And there's no in-game motivation to persevere either. You very quickly realise that with even basic armour and weapons and Smithing skill, you'll vastly out-perform magic; dealing 4x the damage per second, with 4x the protection. Focus on weapon skills and Smithing, and you don't have to constantly pause the game in combat, and your ability scales with the level of challenge, instead of every random encounter being a struggle. So the game is actually more playable without magic. Fortunately, the game does allow you to shift focus as you play, and doesn't have a restrictive class system. Skyrim looks and sounds great, as do most of the AAA titles these days, but has little to offer a player except hours of solo grinding. |

You can quick-key items/spells from your favorites menu, however there is an annoying bug if you're carrying two of one favorited item where the quick-key will be lost on equip.

I've got 124 hours into this game and still love it. It has the usual problems bethesda has in their games but they've done amazingly well in the areas they are known for like exploration. They've improved things like combat and the leveling system.
A big step in the right direction from oblivion. |

Hmm. I didn't try Archery, I bet that could be fun, aye. Still improved by Smithing, I take it? Is there a perk that increases your rate of fire?

I've watched friends play this and it feels like Oblivion, Myst and Riven all over again, beautiful environments but they're largely static and feel dead, with empty quests and a virtually non-existent story line. I get the "Ooh shiny and pretty" factor but that doesn't last very long once the game play begins. Not to rain on anyone's parade here, I just find it odd that there's such a fascination and popularity with this type of game. Then again I play Call of Duty so what do I know

Yeah, I think it requires level 60 archery for faster notching of arrows, the damage output increase has really helped a lot, but the higher difficulty of shots balances it out I feel.

Well, I started again and put in 16 hours, focusing on Archery, the main quest, and Companions quest (to train Archery). Still didn't complete the main quest and lost the will to continue. It's just... boring.
And what is the story!? It's so muddled and muddied and told with such immense lack of enthusiasm that I know as much nearly 60 hours later as I did in the first 60 minutes. The dragons are returning, I am the Dragonborn. Nope, I'm uninstalling and cracking on with Deus Ex: Human Revolution instead. |

16 hours is still more hours than you'll put into most new games. Sounds like a good purchase on your part regardless of your opinion of the game.

Just finished getting to level 50 today. Bored shitless. Spent half an hour just casting telekinesis on a plate to edge it up. I'm a whore for dem achievement points
![]() Yes, most people are getting their moneys worth with the amount of time it takes to do anything, but that's not worth much when, by the end of it, you feel like you wasted your time. Which is my feelings right now. Wish I hadn't bothered. Sob. |
