if you can't tell your own story as you play, then the game probably isn't for you. that's how all the bethesda titles are. they're not linear storyline games. they offer you the tools and set you loose

Yep, I think there's definitely something of childs play about Skyrim, and I don't mean that in a derogatory sense. I mean like how a boy might play with GI Joe toys and construct a story around them, regardless of the official GI Joe storyline, for example. The toys and environment just facilitate the play.
And of course, whatever I might say, I still played nearly 60 hours of Skyrim, so I can't must have been enjoying it. So my gripe might be summarised as: After being lost in play for nearly 60 hours, I needed a compelling story to sustain me. This I didn't find. Overall, Skyrim is diverting but not very satisfying. |

i remember in morrowind creating an argonian, picking up a spear in the first shop and then jumping into the ocean. i swam around hunting fish, collecting pearls and visiting coastal cities. i put about ten hours into that character, and it was some of the most fun i've ever had in a game but if it's not your thing, it's not your thing. and you should feel ashamed and correct this flawed attitude

Also, I'm enjoying the story line, sure the dragons are too easy to kill but whatever, don't give a shit.

That's the journey. The destination, however, is when you can finally craft a legendary Imperial sword of Inferno, you acutely miss there being an economy as such. You can sell your wares to shopkeepers until they run out of coin, and then finito. But yes, it was admittedly a long shot that I'd enjoy Skyrim, but I don't regret giving it a shot.

Here's a thing. I installed Skyrim on my PC again last week, in preparation for a week away from the PS3.
I knew exactly what I needed to do to progress, so apart from the Companions side quest (to get training), I was able to stick to the main quest. Just under 20 hours later and I'd finally completed it.I still think it's an incredibly bad story and badly told too. You're the Dragonborn, destined to slay Alduin, as in the prophecy described in the first loading screen. Everything between the start of the game and completion of the main quest (slaying Alduin) is you running errands for NPCs. And in the aftermath, most of the NPCs don't even acknowledge that the story line ever occurred. In effect, you've had no impact on them or the world; literally nothing has changed. (You still even get dragon raids!) So I stand by what I said about it not being a very satisfying experience. However, after 80 hours of play I can that it's an enjoyably diverting past-time. |

I'm 30 odd hours into this and struggling to maintain interest. I honestly don't know how people are putting over 100 hours in this game.

I think it harks back to the bad old days of CRPGs. Nowadays, when you have Mass Effect 2, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, you can play someone that has an impact on the world and characters around them. And that's perhaps what matters most.
One might say that this is the sacrifice for an open world game, but tbh I felt playing out John Marston's story in Red Dead Redemption was more rewarding than the Dragonborn's in Skyrim. The Dragonborn is just a dead-end avatar. You can invest as much emotion in him as you want, inject as much personality in him as you want, but precious little of it's able to seep into the game world. For example, why bother selecting race in Skyrim? It makes no difference to the story. You can even play a High Elf and it makes no difference, even when you're infiltrating the Thalmor Embassy. They treat you the same as they treat a Breton or Nord. |

I'm still playing my first play through. Have Thieves and Main Story lines still to complete. Went with a typical sword and board build with magic on my first go through. Looking forward to going sneak archer on second play through.
I've got something like 150 hours into this character, doubt I'll be done with this game until April. |

Yes, but as you said: apples and oranges.
I'd describe it more like a hack & slasher with RPG elements and due to it's nature, you often have to figure out what the devs wanted, this unfortunately does not go hand in hand with creating your own adventure and greatly limits its merits as an adventure game because there is no writing/story/plot or creativity which you can use to craft it. |

I have been discouraged at certain points where you try to change the story line with a response only to find that no matter what you say or do you pretty much get the same result.

Finally got around to finishing the main quest line this afternoon. Just have Thieves guild, couple of dragon masks, and few daedric artifacts left to get to have done everything.

I'm finding the workshop on steam is great for getting small things to improve my overall enjoyment. I got a mod that makes it actually dark when it is night so my sneaky dark elf is extra sneaky. Also the mod that gives mudcrabs top hats and monocles is amazing.

I long for the PC version. I come across annoying bugs everytime I play. For example I have someone's flute in my inventory that they refuse to recognize, thus can't complete the quest, and of course I can't drop it. The lack of an enchanting table at the house in whiterun is also maddening. Doesn't make sense, not one bit.

Yeah I guess Xbox wasn't so lucky. I have 3 quests in my list that I can't complete due to glitches. A thieves guild one where I to plant a stolen item in a house, but I have 36 of them in my inventory (amethyst). I drop them in the chest, it doesn't recognize them and cant more forward. Another one I have to get an item from an NPC on a ship in the docks. I go on to the ship, talk to the character I'm supposed to and no chat dialogue opens. Just stuck.
