I thought the replicators were awesome. I didn't find them any scarier than most other RE badguys, and they were really the first monsters other than bosses and the bugs to make an appearance.
Unless you consider Ganado's monsters when their heads bust apart. You always have those type of monsters in RE4. Hunters, Lickers, Gravediggers, etc. I'm just surprised they waited so long before they were shown. |

I agree with a lot of people on here as far as AvP being TENSE as hell.
Silent Hill 2 being just insanely scary and terrifying. Doom 3 being scary and unnerving, a very spooky game. Silent Hill 2 is definitely the scariest game on that list though. |

Could've been scary, if your character/s didn't so totally own all the creatures. Once you realize you can cut them in half or into little bitty pieces it takes the scare factor away imo.

Silent Hill, Clive Barker's Undying, Call Of Cthulhu: Dark Corners Of The Earth and the never-released Bloodline (which had a pretty creepy demo).

Dr. Salvador from Resident Evil 4 was pretty creepy.
Running through the village at the beginning of the game, while hearing that chainsaw was enough to make you piss your pants. You KNEW he was close, but you didn't know WHERE he was. |

The only game that stopped me playing until it was daylight and there where people in the house was Silent Hill. But Resident Evil 2 had its spine tingling moments.

AVP2 [3species demo] marine demo played for the first time. I thought I would die if I go any further. It was scary as hell I was all in sweat and my heart was pounding like never before. I got even morwe scared coz I thought I could have a heart stroke. Then I started getting used to it and then realized it was all scripted.
Also my other scary games: System Shock 2 [never even finished] The Thing Avp Avp2 and some others I dont remember right now. |

You know....DooM on the PS1...was actually really creepy as hell.
Aposed to the original release with funky guitar riffs and drums. You get the sound of what it would be like if Trent Reznor "sleep wrote" on his keyboard as he was having a bad nightmare. Together with that, and the fact i was playing it during a long lonely summer on my farm with the cool air inside the big farm house, and the sun and trees peeking through the blinds, made you feel like you were the only one on earth playing this game. |

The original Doom games. There's not much that's scarier than the arch vile. Not to mention the music, it had this really eerie quality that when combined with demons like the mancubus and revenants, it became scary as hell. Few monsters come close to the cyber demon, a 3 story demon with a rocket launcher for an arm, and the ground would shake as it walked. Playing this game in the dark, late at night, it sent shivers down my spine. To this day it remains as one of the scariest games ever.
Quake. The moaning of the zombies, the sound of them ripping off their own flesh and throwing it at you, and the only thing that could kill them were grenades, otherwise they would just rise up and keep on coming, very disturbing. Pretty much everything in that game was freaky as hell. I loved the game but sort of dreaded playing it because of the various monsters and the dark, unnerving architecture. Return To Castle Wolfenstein. It managed to recapture some of those freaky moments from the old id Software games. Pain Killer. The only recent game I've tried that was quite disturbing and a little scary. Other than that, most new games that try to be scary really aren't, too many cliches or special effects, not striking the right chemistry between the various elements that comprise each environment. |

Conner, if you still have Doom installed, see if you can find the 'WAD' file that replaces the original MIDI music with that of the Playstation version. It's brilliant.

Mods, that's a good point...
There were two for Quake that skyrocketed the pants-shitting experience of it - first being Hell In A Can, an Alien-esque level which had you as the sole crew member of a long-haul cargo ship transporting creatures stored in cages and boxes back to wherever. Each level had you being awoken from cryo by the ship's computer with tasks for you to carry out - the first couple are mundane "go resolve the gravity problem on the lower deck" and the like. After a while of wandering around this huge lonely ship, you are woken to the news that certain cages have been breached in the cargo hold - this is where it starts getting horribly tense, the creatures mainly compromise of Vores and Fiends, the latter always ready to launch themselves out at you from darkened corners and shattered crates. Eventually after one or two more breakouts, the ship's integrity has been compromised and you must make a mad rush to the escape shuttle, obviously with a few Shamblers chasing you down en route. The second was a partial conversion called 'Zerst |

Where birth and death occur, where birth and death are celebrated, metaphorically and literally applied. Nothing particularly scary about either. Connotations come from those within.

Is there a mp3 version of it? That'd be cool to listen to. Speaking of mods, anyone ever play the 'Aliens' conversion for Doom? Now THAT was freakin' scary. It was brilliantly crafted, really looked, felt and sounded like the 2nd film of the series. Even the guns were quite authentic. To be honest, I don't think the first AvP quite captured the atmosphere like this mod did. Another disturbing Doom mod was the Barney mod, which converted all the monsters to the purple dinosaur. Something really eerie about killing a monster that sings "I love you, you love me....". Damn was it freaky. | |

I was creeped out by Max Payne 1's nightmare sequence, it doesn't have anything jumping at you, or some blood gore. It's overal mood, the baby crying in the background, you running in slow motion in the void.
