    Homelab Time

So I guess some tech update since it's been like... oh a decade. So I got into running my own lab, which eventually became the backbone of my consultant work...

Things are kind of messy, but I'll be moving stuff around after my move in a about 6-12 weeks.

3 Hypervisors (ESXi), a FreeNAS box providing iSCSI LUNs, a JBOD with some SSDs. Stacked Cisco switches for core and an EdgeRouter Lite firewall which I'm about ready to throw in the trash (trying to decide between Sophos or Fortinet firewalls).

And yeah that's an LTO-6 tape library, was stupidly cheaper than running backups on the cloud. I also get the added benefit of a 3+ month off-site rotation policy right now.

And yeah, the FreeNAS box has a red light on it -- dead fan, don't care.

I'll post pics of my basement later, nothing that fancy yet. Just a nas and a switch and some extra cabling I did around the house.

I transitioned to an avoton based mini-itx board with dual NICS.
Started out running Ubuntu Server, now it's chucking away on Xpenology. Supports Docker n' stuff so I can virtualize if need be.
Hosting my website and mostly just running my plex media server and keeping my library intact.
Had unlimited amazon backups, but then they had a change of heart, so back to backing up on hard-drives instead.
Considering getting a second box with some archive drives in JBOD for backups, but not there yet.

It's a really nice home lab though. Kinda wondering what you need all that storage for though.

To be fair, I do most of my 'nerding' up in AWS these days.

My NAS even backs up to there.

I pondered with that but everything got way too expensive up there (>$2,000/mo easy for the ~70 servers I run, many of them needing to be "hot" all the time now for work). I couldn't even put backups up there in a cost-effective manner (even when ACD was more dependable as an option I had some trouble which made me immediately nope out of that idea, and glacier was going to cost north of $100/mo, even without pulling down an image to restore).

Super-sweet though if you just want to spin stuff up and putz and turn it back off, even better if you got something like Ansible all ready to go.

I used to double-NAT when I lived with my parents due to my setup, was always interesting.

I've also run with two routers, one with routing disabled and used as a switch before, lol.
