Diverse within a particular spectrum that you find awesome, yes, fair enough. But to me, By The Way sounds like Californication II and Stadium Arcadium like Californication III - what evolution they've gone through between their earlier works and Californication is all well and good (certainly not a particularly noticable one IMO), but it strikes me that they're no longer progressing their music into new territory.
Hold up though, because I can say the same for In Flames, Levellers, Eels, Dark Tranquillity and Nile, many of my absolute favourite artists. It's not really a negative thing - each have dabbled with different aspects of their musicianship within a noticable tagent of what makes them recognisable as 'that band'. This is not what I consider to be musically diverse however. Who I do consider to be just that are the likes of Primal Scream, Fantomas, Devin Townsend, Radiohead, Bjork, UNKLE and their ilk, where most releases are confoundingly different from the last. Even Madonna as Conner said. I reserve my labelling of music as being diverse quite conservatively but it's by no means a bad thing. In fact, artists who doggedly pursue diversity too much make the odd stinker of an album. |

Mum used to suggest I listen to Mozart when doing my homework. I didn't and am thusly an academic FAILURE.

When I first listened to Stadium Arcadium, I totally lost track of where 1 song finished and another began around 1/2 way through the album and I didn't even notice when it finished.
Back in the day, it was "New RHCP album = must buy GOGOGOGOGO" now it's more like "Hmmm I'll listen to it a couple of times first because I'm not paying money to listen to the same stuff over again". |

Also, saying that you don't like where I'm coming from, figuratively speaking, was a little too personal. Disagree with me, that's cool, but your statement was too antagonistic. I find it hard to believe that my stance on this is that disagreeable, unreasonable or objectionable since I went to great lengths to make my intention very clear, that it was anything but what you alleged. In any event, this has digressed too far for too long, we obviously don't agree, so let's leave it at that. Peace. Quote:

Dude, Connor, this is by far one of the most drug out, beat-to-fucking-death dead horses I have EVER seen! I mean, I don't even remember what we're arguing about man!! For Christ's sake. What, were you stating your opinion as a fact and I didn't like that? WHO CARES! I mean, what are we fighting like this for? We sound like a bunch of little bitches!! I can't believe us! HA!! WE'RE A COUPLE OF WHINEY BITCHES!! HAAA! Listen to us!
I don't think your opinion should be stated as a fact! Well you're causing the thread's malaise! Dude, what Injy said about emotion is true, and that's pretty much the only fact I've seen in this thread. You have to use emotion to judge music, not facts or text book definitions, music is something that comes and goes through the soul, everyone is going to be effected differently by it. There's no formula to explain that. |

RHCP are a bunch of over-rated crap. IMOHO of course but when I BOUGHT (blindly) this album many moons ago, it did not turn me on in the slightest. Maybe I missed the innovation of nufunk-rock but it seems a very gimmicky genre to me. There were maybe one or two tracks that stood out three or four hairs above the others but then since I hadn't listened to them before people covering them had raped my potential opinion and since recently they've become pop-mundanity, I have no interest in them whatsoever.

Music, including theirs, has changed so much over the years that it's almost impossible to put their innovation into the context of the time in which it came out. Sure you can read about the ground they broke back then but actually experiencing that music when other genres of music were dominating the airwaves is a completely different matter altogether.
Naturally overexposure of nearly anything will sour its novelty. |
