A new photo has surfaced of Karl Urban as Judge Dredd in the upcoming Dredd movie. Helmet looks true to the comics....not so sure about the rest of it (and why the shit lighting?). Notably, his usual shoulderplates appear to be missing but I hear this is based on a much older version of his uniform (which must be pretty bloody old because I don't remember it).

Nice. Here's hoping that the movie has some soul and is very unlike Urban's 'Doom'. Would it kill the studios to add some character development to comic book heroes?

The first official poster is now out:

Dredd creator John Wagner has also seen the finished film and given it a thumbs up:

"I went up to London yesterday to see the completed Dredd film. I’ve had reservations about certain aspects of it, and made them plain to the team at DNA. All but one of them – a little quibble at the beginning – have been addressed. And what a lot they’ve added. Music is on the button. SFX are excellent. Filming is impressive. I’ve not seen a modern 3-D movie before but I like it. I found myself reaching out trying to touch things that were dancing before my eyes.

Karl is a great Dredd and Olivia gets Anderson completely. This is Dredd as it should be done – true to character, visceral, unrelentingly violent (but not off-puttingly so). It will open, I believe, sometime in September. No doubt you’ll let me know what you think when you’ve seen it, but this has my recommendation."

Hmm, excellent. For me that seal of approval means I may or may not like the film, but it is at least a faithful adaptation of the source material. Eagerly anticipating a trailer now.

Aye. Was a bit weird to see a photo of one Judge wielding a Heckler & Koch MP5 though. I mean, that's not even a futuristic-looking gun, though I suppose it's from the same era as the original comics, the 1980s, and many of the early gun designs were kind of retro. Hell, the orginal Lawgiver looked like a Mauser.

Also puzzling is that the Chief Judge is an Afro-American actress (Rakie Ayola). The only female Chief Judges I recall from the original comics were McGruder and Hershey - both of whom were Caucasian. Just seems odd to create a wholly new character instead of using those already established in canon. Even the Stallone film pulled most of the Judge Council from the comics despite fucking up the characters (for eg., making Griffin a villain).

It also looks like the Resyk will feature as a location since IMDB lists a character as (sic)'Resyck Man'.

Here's a 10 second blink-and-you'll-miss-it look at the new Dredd film in advance of the trailer this Thursday. Looks like the smaller budget meant that Mega-City isn't as futuristic as it should be (reminds me more of a Robocop-style near-future setting) but as long as Urban delivers, I should be happy....

Actually, the one thing they did allow Danny Cannon in the Stallone film was a grand recreation of Mega City One. From what I gather, we won't really much of Mega City One in this film, just the underside of one dead-end Block. Injek will be pleased that Urban's intelligible.

Full trailer is out now (at work so couldn't get a decent link....just Google it). Doesn't look too bad really.....Urban certainly seems to have the chops (and gravelly voice) for Dredd. The thought occurred to me though that as a leading character, it's near impossible to give Joe Dredd any kind of meaningful character arc over the course of the film simply because he's so set in his ways and inflexible (ie. the whole point of being the faceless, fascistic icon of the law). I guess that means Anderson will have to get all the character development work instead.

Of course, they had to make him say "I am the Law!" and "The sentence is death!" lines in the trailer as obvious fan service

Ooh, enjoyed that. OK, Mega City One is more like Mega District 9, and the plot has startling similarities to the recently released Indonesian film The Raid (which wasn't all it was cracked up to be btw), but it feels like Dredd from the trailer.

Alot of people are comparing it to The Raid....even though Dredd was in production first.

As for the look of Mega-City One....I'm guessing this is set early on in the Dredd timeline. It didn't always look as it did in the Stallone version - much in the same way that Dredd's uniform became more exaggerated over the years. The look of Urban's uniform is more consistent with the early comics.
