It would be laudable if the Academy snuck in Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon as a snide joke about the state of American cinema. But alas, they didn't. Twas our own Derek237's wit.

I've never heard of some of those. Moneyball was the only one I've seen and I thought it was pretty good although they left some things out from the book which I would have liked to see in there. Also, that being the industry I want to work in I may have been more critical of the specifics of the movie than others may have been.

Finally got around to seeing "The Artist" yesterday. Had to ride solo on that one as I couldn't find a single person that wanted to see it. Apparently B&W silent films do not appeal to the masses. They missed out, it was pretty good. I wouldn't pick it as the best movie of the year (The Descendants) but I bet it wins.

I would like to see Drive up there. I suppose it's too indie for them or whatever. Actually, I don't know if it technically was an indie film. But in any case, that movie was surprisingly good and deserves some loving.

I wouldn't say they should go completely against the curve and nominate Green Lantern or Transformers or Cowboys & Aliens or some shit, but jeez, couldn't they have nominated Harry Potter? It only made like a bajillion dollars and was critically acclaimed to the max which is more than you can say for that Tom Hanks 9/11 movie which I have heard absolutely nothing about.
I hate the fact that they have the 10 slots for best picture now (only 9 actually nominated this year so uh okay not sure how that works) because at the time I guess their intent was to have space open for more movies like The Dark Knight, which left a lot of people butthurt after it didn't get a best picture nomination. Well that's pretty much bullshit cause they're really just sticking to more of the same and still shutting out movies that I guess they don't feel to be "worthy" of a best picture nomination. In the past 3 years the ballsiest choice they ever made with the 10 slots was District 9, and I wasn't even a big fan of that movie, but it was still cool to see it up on that list since there was absolutely no way it would have been nominated had they stayed with only 5 nominees. But seriously the point is Harry Potter should have been nominated. They can give LOTR a collective, what, 25 nominations or so, yet Harry Potter gets the same old shit the series has been getting since day one, which is like, costumes or set design or the shit no one really cares about. |

I think Soccy needs to learn how to google!
Harry Potter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia "Since the release of the first novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone on 30 June 1997, the books have gained immense popularity, critical acclaim and commercial success worldwide" |

I think he was being sarcastic but it's not like you can really contest something being acclaimed, well, I guess you can, but in this case I don't think there can be really much of an argument. The Potter series is acclaimed and that has nothing to do with my personal opinion, it just is. Like for example the TV show Glee is acclaimed, can't deny it, but fuck that show. And fuck anyone who thinks it's good.

2. Acclaim is subjective isn't it? Acclaim from whom? I think the whole point of the word is lost if you use it a general sense 3. Soccy is STILL A TROLLING CUNT!

Well yeah it's true as soscratis said Twilight is acclaimed, which i guess it is, i mean, acclaim from teenage girls is still acclaim. hell, even 'literature' is a subjective term. now that i think about it. but my original point was that harry potter is based on a series of paper with words on it that has been admired and loved by readers of all ages and critics alike while transformers is based on a line of toys, so you could argue it's more respectable and could at least be within the academy's radar.

literature isn't subjective, but people will still use it incorrectly. for example, some consider harry potter to be literature instead of the shitty, one-step-above-twilight, young adult series that it really is
