Gothic music
Hi,
Does anyone listen to much gothic type music apart from the most obvious bands like NIN and Manson? One band i love is Lycia. Although they kinda went a bit downhill in the past few years, they still have some of the best gothic/atmospheric albums out there, IMO. Check out their albums, "Ionia" and "Cold." My favourite song of their's is "Fate." Lycia also had a side project known as Bleak who released the album, "Vane." This album featured a darker side to Lycia, with more anarchic, lo-fi beats and distorted ethereal guitars flowing over the top. It's amazing music and creates such an awesome atmosphere. If you like gothic/ethereal music, I recommend you checking them out if you havn't. ![]() Keep in mind though, the albums I mentioned are pretty hard to come by though, so you may need to resort to downloading... but you didn't hear me say that. :P Does anyone listen to any other gothic bands? |

Browsing through my playlist - Dark Funeral, David Sylvian, Immortal, Lacuna Coil, Lunascape, Moonspell, My Dying Bride, Nightwish, Tapping The Vein, Within Temptation and Wumpscut all fall under gothic-esque music in one way or another.
I'm usually more partial to more medidative gothic music as opposed to the raucous stuff, though the latter is still nice now and then. Lycia sound pretty good Psy, I'll check them out. |

You guys got problems if you think Dark Funeral, In Flames, Hammerfall, Gorgoroth, Nightwish, Immortal, etc. are gothic. Calling Black Metal, Viking Metal, and Symphonic Power Metal gothic is awful and I hope you wouldn't bring it up at a show if you wanted to live. And on topic, the only goth bands I ever really listen to occasionally are Bella Morte and Leaether Strip.

'In one way or another'. To deny there is wasn't any at least subtle gothic influences at some point in the history of the artists I mentioned doesn't fly with me.
I agree about In Flames though, I don't see how their music is gothic in any way. |

The Cure is the only original "Goth" band I listen to regularly anymore, but I don't really consider them that. Occassionally I'll pop in Sisters of Mercy or London After Midnight. It's just too hard to find quality stuff in the myopia of cheese.
Collide is one newer goth-ish band I love, though. Beautiful music, and the singer's a fox. |

Given the random shit I listen to some gothic stuff is bound to slip in un-noticed. On the whole though the closest I probably get to gothic music (excluding Manson) is indutrial type stuff, like Skinny Puppy, Coal Chamber, and some of the heavier darker stuff like Dimmu Borgir, DevilDriver, My Dying Bride, and some other bits and pieces I can't seem to name off the top of my head...

Black metal may be pushing the boundries somewhat. However, they are great bands all the same. but I had in mind the more genuine stuff, bands like 'Joy Division' for example...
'Faith And The Muse' is probably the most recent gothic band I like. They've got a very cool ethereal vibe and the singers voice is really angelic. "Fade And Remain" is probably my favourite of their songs. It's a great song to die to, heh. London After Midnight and Collide are great bands, btw.

No, the only "gothic" music I listen to is Manson... I'm ashamed to admit this, but I also like goth-pop, more specifically Evanescence.

I never understood why Evanesance were classed as goth. Is it just because of the slutty makeup she wears? Because they have no gothic element in their music whatsoever. Just another disposable pop band. :P

Bella Morte is a pretty cool goth band, especially the older stuff they categorize as' Death Rock' (similar to Misfits). Newer stuff is more electronica...Funeral Night is a pretty catchy one.

How about Katatonia? [yes spelt with a K]
Viva Emptiness & Tonight's Decision <3 can't think of all that many actually... Tiamat? Prey was 50/50. Evanescence are the best band in existence and their musical formula is flawless. As is Amy Lee's rack................ of effects. their piano ballad's are probably the best songs. Exodus, Give unto Me, Hello, My Immortal [original piano version from demo CD], You. [aren't meant to download that last one, some personal reason attached to it] and how about LiNkIn PaRk! |

I've heard people dismiss Cradle of Filth as gothic posers and whatnot, anyone wanna explain that to me?
Also, what's the difference between gothic metal, black metal, and death metal? I like them all, but I don't really know how to differentiate them, and thus, I classify them all as 'Heavy Metal.' |

Cradle of Filth pretty much get slandered as posers merely because they're the most commercially successful gothic metal band. Basically they're seen as being "sold out" or as "mallcore." They're also seen as being very tacky and "fake" to the more underground metal fans, as well as their music being over-produced.
Fundementally, all those genres you mentioned are very similar, but the main differences as I see them are usually lyrical content and slight musical style. Black metal bands tend to follow a theme of evil and have a more epic "wall-of-noise" sound with satanic/anti-christian lyrics. Death metal is more riff-based and lyrically more about hatred, killing or injustice for various things. With that said, it usually depends on what band it is, since many usually take many elements from different genres, so it's hard to really catagorize them all. Personally, I don't really like to lump bands into a specific genre because most of them usually have their own unique quality. |
