Doom : The latest
Link
~~ Forget Halo. Forget Grand Theft Auto. Back in the day, there was only one definitive, ass-kicking, glorious game of violence. That game was Doom. The granddaddy of first-person-shooters, the one that started them all. As addictive as crack, but less wholesome. We cut classes, we quit bathing, we forgot about dating--all to wield the chainsaw and pump the shotgun. And the "BFG." Now, years after its heyday, "Doom" finally hits the big screen. From Universal Studios and director Andrzej Bartkowiak ("Cradle 2 the Grave," "Exit Wounds"), and starring The Rock and Karl Urban (Eomer from "The Lord of the Rings"), "Doom" intends to be a faithful adaptation of the classic game. "Really?" you might say. "When do they start shooting?" Heh. You never would guess it from the film's publicity--or lack thereof--but "Doom" has actually finished shooting. Universal has kept this puppy a veritable secret. No promotion. No trailers. No teasers. Not even a one-sheet. Bartkowiak has been filming in Prague, out of the limelight and out of the studio's crosshairs. In short, for a big-budget release, we know shockingly little. Until now. Earlier this year, I accepted Universal's invitation to visit the set of "Doom." I trekked out to snowy, gloomy, beautiful Prague, and had a chance to interview The Rock, Karl Urban, and all the key members of the special effects crew. In the coming months, we'll be sharing each of these interviews, plus a complete report on the set, the story, and the monsters. Some things, though, you should know right away: 1. The tone: There's nothing soft or watered-down about "Doom." In their own words, the makers of the film are going for a "Hard R." Excellent news for Doomers. 2. The set: Every set, every corridor, every weapon looks faithful to the game. The set is a maze of dark corridors, steel-dungeony-looking hallways that should be scary as hell. The arsenal of weapons includes several nods to the game, including, of course, the BFG. 3. The effects: Bartkowiak is using real models when possible, minimizing the employment of green screens. For instance, the monsters have real monster costumes--dark and creepy. The "Baron," in particular, looks like an "Aliens"-worthy creature. Much more on him later. 4. The story: The script is loosely based on the "Doom 3" videogame. Sometime in the future, John Grimm (Karl Oben), Sarge (The Rock), and a military -esque crew receive a distress call from a science lab on the remote planet Olduvai. (No, that's not a cologne.) They teleport to Olduvai. Once on Oldvuai, they're thrown into a maelstrom of dimly-lit hallways, monsters, and bloodshed. The setup might differ slightly from the game, but it's the same meat and potatoes. 5. The location: Don't worry. No part of "Doom" takes place in Prague. The sets are all indoors--as befits the brooding game--and have nothing to do with Czechoslovakia. Who knows how this will play. But one thing is for certain: "Doom" has an edge. A gritty, R-rated, punch-you-in-the-jugular edge. Check back soon for the complete report. ~~ See, that all sounds like the making of a decent adaptation if it wasn't for the lack of the inclusion of Doom's linchpin - the creatures from hell. I'm hoping the previous talk of 'genetic mutations' are a red herring and what they actually turn out to be are the spawn of Dante's arsehole...otherwise as many have said, we've just got a Resident Evil in space with zappy weapons. I want blood running down the walls, hellgates, poltergeist activity, possession, disturbing hallucinations, paranoia and fucking demons.

Except than Mars was an important element. I'm absolutely not a Doom fan, but I'm some kind of a Mars fan. Mars is the red planet, the closest, the most mythical, the most real, close, menacing and familiar. and EVEN JOHN CARPENTER UNDERSTOOD THAT.

I'm looking forward to this one more and more everyday, the R rating alone is comforting to most of us DooM fans i'm sure.

Looks interesting, but of course, RE looked interesting as well...
I'm just wondering what gap there will be between their intentions, and the result. If there's no gap, it could be make a good "in your face" movie...Strange though, Quake I would seem to me to be a much more cinematographic game to adapt... |

Definitely. Gothy medieval creatures versus nailgun-toting inter-dimensional marines would be a good laugh.

And the set... I fear that this "corridors"-only decision for DooM might be boring after half an hour. That gothic feel to quake could provide some great sets.

There's going to be a lot of FPS shots from Urban's perspective, which I think will work really well. Those kind of shots are notoriously tense, so seeing some freakish creature launch itself from a darkened corner straight at the screen should at least provide some decent yelps.

Well it seems a bit better I suppose. When I first heard about the movie it seemed, well, doomed.
Now better news is comming up and I'm slightly more intruiged. I'm not getting my hopes up though. |

This could be good, could. If the rumours about the monsters not being from hell are true I'll be disappointed. I'd even take that they are imitating hell like in the novels.

Seems that they changed the overall direction, and came closer to the Doom roots.
Is it due to the words "faithful", or the mentions of the Baron, teleportation and those original weapons? Then you ask, why the hell didn't they simply do Doom, with Mars instead of Olduvai (what?), and hell demons instead of mutants on acids? This is totally stupid! They were almost there! Oh, well, nevermind. We all know it won't be the true Doom. Just a free adaptation, more "inspired by" than really "copycated". Let's hope that it delivers and gets as enjoyable as Deep Rising, or even more.

I just keep telling myself, someday when I'm a billionaire, I'll make *faithful* adaptations of video game movies. I mean, Doom3 would make a righteous movie IMO.
As it stands, however, the current Doom movie project doesn't sound all that bad. Granted, it's not accurate to the game, but hey, I'll probably still see it. I've been a hardcore Doom fanboy since the original game was new. Shit, I've probably still got my old Doom shareware disc (still in its original packaging) lying around somewhere. |

This is gonna be quite the suckfest. I can't believe people still put stock into video game adaptations. It's a cursed genre.

Kind of hard to say its the same "meat and Potatoes" when you've replaced the meat (in this case hell, demons, and mars) with leftovers and potatoes with steaming piles of fecal matter.
Still I'll probably see the movie, gawd dammit. We really need to stop giving hollywood money for surving us a big mac when we asked for a steak. Sorry I'm stuck on the meat references. |

Frankly, I think video games have the POTENTIAL to be kickass movies, and somewhere along the way they get ruined. I mean, some games totally lend themselves to being made into movies. Case in point: Max Payne (and, incidentally, the writer for both Payne games is penning the script for the movie. Thank god).

This is a film I watch with pleasure when I need a funny B movie with its own level of originality. Now, to get more serious, we could mention Screamers (an adaptation). Now, if I really want lods of action, if I want to see boys band in space, stuck in lame armour and fighting legions of big ugly monsters, I think nothing will surpass Verhoeven's Starship Troopers. Since I hardly see that Doom adaptation be serious... it'll probably be closer to a zombie flick. Let's hope it doesn't turn into Alone in the Dark (Uwe Boll's official site). Wait. I don't care if this is awful in fact. What annoys me is that people will always relate the crappy quality of those adaptation failures to their origins: video games. | |
