Survivor Winner Hatch Guilty Of Ta
Some 50 million people watched the first "Survivor" jury award Richard Hatch a million dollars back in 2000. Wednesday, a different jury delivered a far less favorable verdict.
The 44-year-old Hatch, who parlayed his victory into a sort of reality-TV celebrity and appeared on "Survivor: All-Stars" in 2004, was convicted in Providence, R.I., of two counts of tax evasion, one of which was for failing to pay income tax on his "Survivor" winnings. The jury also handed down a guilty verdict on one count of filing a false return. He was found innocent of several other charges, including bank fraud and wire fraud, news reports say. After the verdict was read, Hatch, who was deemed a flight risk, was led away in handcuffs. He faces a sentence of as long as 13 years in prison and fines of $600,000 on the three charges; sentencing is scheduled for April. Hatch, whose preference for nudity and scheming play on the inaugural "Survivor" in the summer of 2000 made him a lightning-rod figure for viewers, has long claimed that he thought CBS, which airs "Survivor," or Mark Burnett Productions, which produces it, would pay the $300,000-plus he owed the government. His lawyer, Michael Minns, tried to portray him as simply "the world's worst bookkeeper." At one point during the two-week trial -- though not while the jury was in the courtroom -- Minns also floated the theory that CBS and the show's producers agreed to pay Hatch's taxes in exchange for him keeping quiet about supposed cheating during the game. The subject didn't come up during Hatch's testimony, however. Hatch was also found guilty of failing to pay taxes on income he earned from hosting a Boston radio station where he co-hosted a show and on rental property he owned. The false-return charge stemmed from his failure to state his "Survivor" winnings on his 2000 tax return. He could have avoided the trial a year ago in a deal offered by prosecutors: Plead guilty to two counts of tax evasion in exchange for a recommendation that he receive less than the maximum sentence. Hatch initially agreed, then turned down the deal a couple months later. He was indicted in September. _______________________________________________ What do you all think of this? I'm not surprised, it came around and caught up to him. |

Well, if he's anything like the character he played in Starship Troopers 2: Hero of The Federation, he'll be fine in prison ..er.. wait. That guy must've just been a Hatch look-alike. Cripes!
