PLAYSTATION 3 OS Incomplete: Updatable Through Internet/Media
By LostToys @ 02:01 PM :: Sony Playstation :: Comment Now
A source told GameIndustry that the Sony PS3 consoles at this years Tokyo Game Show were incomplete, at least in terms of the operating system.
As it turns out, our source was correct (about the state of the OS) as SCEA has confirmed to us that the OS used in the PS3s at the show were not final. In fact, the OS may still be in the process of being finalized currently and it can be "flashed" into the machine at any time, even after all the other hardware components are made. It's likely that it's being refined up to the point that Sony is actually ready to put the consoles in boxes for retail.

We were told that this should not affect PS3 production whatsoever. Moreover, SCEA does not believe that the state of the OS at TGS had anything to do with the system resets or other glitches that some witnessed. Sony reiterated that it was the confined cases and other unfriendly trade show conditions that caused problems with the consoles.

In addition, Sony said it has the capability to upgrade the PS3's OS after the console launches through its online network, memory stick files or Blu-ray discs.

October 11 is Final Fantasy XII Day in New York
By LostToys @ 01:56 PM :: Sony Playstation :: Comment Now
Coming in the "What the Hell?" catagory comes news that Wednesday, October 11, will be Final Fantasy XII day in New York Cirty.
In honor of Final Fantasy XII's release on October 31 in North America, October 11, 2006 will be made Final Fantasy XII Day in New York City. Festivities will include a press conference and the announcement of cosplay contest winners. Daishiro Okada, president and COO of Square Enix, and Akitoshi Kawazu, executive producer of Final Fantasy XII, will both be in attendance.

The event will take place in the New York City Visitor's Center in Times Square at 1560 Broadway, between 46th and 47th Streets, NYC 10036.

I for one hope to tap some furry Viera ass.

How Will the PS2 Hold Up In Face of Next Generation?
By LostToys @ 01:52 PM :: Sony Playstation :: Comment Now
GameIndustry has an article up examining the prospects of the PS2 in the future, in the face of the eminent PS3 launch, and competition from the Xbox 360 and Wii.
Overall, the PS2 is far more likely to get continued support because of its vast installed base. "We expect the PS2 platform to receive greater support from the OEM and third-party publishers than XBX last year. Several high-profile titles could help PS2 demand stay strong. Among the titles this fall, Guitar Hero II could make the difference for PS2... PS2 as a platform likely has a longer life than XBX did last year. Nevertheless, we caution that because the PS2 installed base is 4x the XBX installed base, and further because PS2 is still the largest platform by revenue, a 1% point decline in revenue on PS2 is more material to publishers," said the analyst duo.

So it seems that the PS2 still has some legs in it, but will Kaz ideal future, where the PS2 is alive and kicking for 5 more years, become a reality? It is highly unlikely, but a crazy man can dream, can't he?

Phantasy Star Universe Free Open Beta: $10 Monthly Fee Beyond
By LostToys @ 01:31 PM :: XBox: Role-Playing :: Comment Now
  As shamelessly ripped from 1UP
On Wednesday, Sega will be conducting a free, open beta of PSU for Xbox 360 via Xbox Live. Players can literally download the entire game, though you must have XBL Gold Service to participate, without forking over a dime and play for a week. The beta period will come to an end on October 18th.

The game will only be available for download October 11th and 12th, however, so make sure to take advantage of Sega's offer while it's there.

Sega also confirmed they will be charging a $10 a month GUARDIANS license to continue playing PSU online, even if you're a paying XBL Gold Service member. The fee applies to all versions of the game, and PlayStation 2 and PC owners can purchase a discounted six-month license for $49.95.

After Burner Sets Sights on PSP in Spring of 2007
By LostToys @ 01:07 PM :: Sony Playstation :: Comment Now
In odd developement news, it seems that Sega's After Burner is headed to the PSP. But tha house that built Sonic is not developing the title, rather, it is Planet Moon Studios, of Giants: Citizen Kabuto fame.
SEGA has announced that After Burner will be released for the PSP in spring 2007. The game, titled After Burner: Black Falcon, is in development at Planet Moon Studios and will allow players to relive the experience of the arcade game.

Black Falcon is an arcade-style flight combat game, but it'll include 19 officially licensed military planes. Your task is to recover 13 stolen fighter planes, using explosive weapons and cutting edge high-speed jets. As well as a single-player campaign, the game will include numerous multiplayer modes, for co-op and competitive play.

EBGames and GameStop Take In-Store Pre-Orders: Sold Out in Seconds
By LostToys @ 12:59 PM :: General Gaming :: Comment Now
GameStop and EB Games will begin accepting limited pre-orders for the PlayStation 3 console on Tuesday, October 10, on a first come, first served basis. Due to extremely limited supply, we expect to deplete this allocation very quickly, most likely in minutes. We will not accept additional pre-orders at this time. To avoid an unnecessary trip we strongly recommend you call your local store to determine availability. A $100 reservation deposit is required, which can be funded with cash, credit or trade. As we cannot control production and shipping issues by the manufacturer, a reservation deposit does not guarantee receipt of a system available to purchase at launch. Reservations/Purchases are limited to 1 per household.

I implore all of you to call up your local GameStop and EBGames and inquire about PS3 pre-orders. Cause, you know, they like nothing more than being called by customers inquiring about something that was instantly sold out in a couple of seconds.

EBGames Launches Digital Distribution: Consumers Given No Price Break
By LostToys @ 12:30 PM :: General Gaming :: Comment Now
So it seems that EBGames has released a new downloadable content service called Download Now. Here is the skinny:
We offer a huge selection of games available for download directly to your PC. Simply select the downloadable games you wish to purchase and use our secure digital download checkout. You will be prompted to save these games directly to your PC using our robust download managing software. No rentals, no subscriptions - you own the game! In some cases, trial versions are also available, so you can even review the game before making a purchase.

How long is the free trial?

Trial periods vary by publisher. Most trial periods last for 30 minutes of game play. Trial periods cannot be extended, but you will have the option to purchase the full product after the trial period ends. Many full-game products also come with a full 48-hour money back guarantee, which you can use to extend your evaluation.

Now, this brings up an interesting question. Much of the profit at EBGames and their ilk comes from the purchasing and reselling of used product. There is no current model for selling a "used" copy of a digitally distributed game. I wonder if EBGames will find a way of buying back digital copies from consumers (at a low price) then selling it to a new consumer (for a high price) to increase their profit margins.

EDIT: The content pack contains 5 new multiplayer characters and 4 new multiplayer maps.
