( READ ATTACHED PRESS RELEASE ) Today, Electronic Arts announced plans to release The Lord Of The Rings The Battle For middle-Earth II for the Xbox 360. Following the PC version of course, The Lord Of The Rings The Battle For middle-Earth II for the Xbox 360 will be host to new console specific controls, and is being developed by EA?s Los Angeles studio.
Based on the PC version of the same name, The Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle-earth II for the Xbox 360 will bring players into the heart of Middle-earth to live the battles seen in the blockbuster New Line Cinema films and classic J.R.R. Tolkien literary fiction. The game boasts a new and intuitive console-specific control scheme that will allow novice players to enjoy the game's signature strategy gameplay while giving expert players the flexibility needed to engage in a deeply complex strategy experience. Players will directly control hundreds of units in an attempt to defeat enemy armies, conquer new lands, and seal the fate of Middle-earth.

Developed at EA's Los Angeles studio, The Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle-earth II for the Xbox 360 offers players a new depth of The Lord of the Rings fiction never before explored in an EA console game. The game makers at EALA have brought The Lord of the Rings world to life in accordance with an agreement with The Saul Zaentz Company d/b/a Tolkien Enterprises that grants EA the rights to develop games based on the books, in addition to a separate agreement that allows for games based on the New Line Cinema films.

The Lord Of The Rings The Battle For middle-Earth II will ship during summer 2006.

RTS on a console?
wtf?

id rather have a diablo clone on a console (with multiplayer of course)

Oh, this is baaad news. Could still be a good game, but what the original needed was much deeper gameplay and you don't usually get that from a console game.

Edit: At least it's a PC port to console, not vice versa.

Didn't they put Starcraft on a console at one time? I can't imagine an RTS on a gamepad, unless they really streamline it. ie. dumb it down.

command and conquer was on the PS1... yucky!

Dune for the Sega Genesis is still one of the best RTS ever. Period.

Yes Spruce Moose, on the N64. It didn't turn out so well.

Dune on the Genesis was great.. then again.. the speed of the gameplay wasnt nearly as high or intensive as RTS's of the past 10 years...so it was "doable" on a gamepad.

but this game on a console? sounds to me like MS is struggling to get "named" products on their hardware.

Hey, why has this been made a Hot Topic with only 8 posts?

Well, the ps1 did have a mouse controller that made those C&C games play a lot better. Does the 360 support usb keyboards and mice? I thought I read somewhere that it would, but they wouldn't be used for game controls. Can't think of what else you would use it for though.

C&C on the PS1 was just awkward.

You also need to remember the Kessen series on the PS2. Those are actually very good RTS titles.
